Upon returning to the U.S. from a sojourn in Mexico, dodging manhunters in the wake of his Texas adventures told in Gun Men, the shootist known only as Sloan finds himself in Arizona territory, killing time. After he rescues teenager Miranda Platt from would-be rapists, her wealthy widowed mother hires Sloan to escort their entourage from the mining camp of Steep Falls to Phoenix, bound for a train trip home to New York City. Along the way, they find themselves beset by renegade Apaches, road agents, and a gang of would-be kidnappers who have a spy planted within Marcella Platt's own retinue. Who will survive to reach their final destination?
